For nearly three years, I provided hands-on marketing and storytelling consulting services to the Association for Women in Science (AWIS), including producing digital stories on women in science, catapulting social media engagement, forging connections to leaders and cultural influencers in science, and establishing other touchpoints for member engagement.
Highlights
- I increased the organization’s LinkedIn followers by 125% (>17K followers total and >1.3 million organic impressions in 2022) — and Twitter followers by 46% — by creating high-quality, highly relevant social media content.
- I produced a weekly email newsletter with a 40-50% open rate alongside hundreds of other mass emails — curating news round-ups and developing timely resources (like this email on inclusive language) tailored to an audience of equity-minded STEM professionals.
- I supported the organization in developing and executing a new content marketing strategy, which led to record website traffic to the organization’s website (the primary goal). This included launching and growing a new online content platform and creating new content-driven strategies for mass email and social media.
- I identified and produced the cover stories for all four issues of AWIS Magazine in 2021, featuring Nobel Laureates Jennifer Doudna and Andrea Ghez, Crystal Emery (filmmaker and STEM advocate), Fatma Kaplan (biotech founder and AWIS member), and Marie Bernard (former NIH Chief Officer for Scientific Workforce Diversity).
- I identified and produced countless stories from inside the association’s membership, including essays by women leaders at Google and Tesla and several stories of women scientists who were part of the COVID-19 response.
- I leveraged my network and industry insights to make connections for keynote event speakers, webinar speakers and facilitators, and myriad magazine stories.
- I created an editorial style guide for the organization to improve consistency and quality across all written materials.
- I helped develop the organization’s database of historical women in STEM.

Testimonials
Jenna was originally hired for a three-month gap between marketing directors at the Association for Women in Science. When I joined the association, I found her expertise in the area of diversity and her connections with STEM professionals so valuable that I kept her on to manage our social media channels and newsletters for almost three years. During that time, she has grown our LinkedIn audience by nearly 125% and helped pilot two new newsletters.
I particularly appreciated Jenna’s knowledge of current events and content suggestions. She regularly recommended that AWIS highlight a new research report, an author launching a book, or someone recently promoted into a leadership role — knowing which stories were relevant to our audience.
Jenna is a kind, authentic gem of a human. I’m grateful to have had the opportunity to learn from her as I took on this big new role. I will miss bouncing ideas off of her, as well as her writing abilities, thoughtfulness, and dependability.
—Shelley O’Brien, Chief Marketing Officer, Association for Women in Science
Jenna significantly grew our social media presence. She always hit the correct voice for the association and amplified voices we were proud to support. She brought a true understanding of the space (women in science and equity in STEM) and a willingness to teach those who didn’t understand it as well. Jenna’s services would be valuable to any organization.
